New Orleans Rookie Says Early Goodbye to Saints After Heartbreaking Loss to 49ers

New Orleans, September 15, 2025 – Barely having a chance to fully savor the thrill of his NFL debut, rookie Vernon Broughton has been forced to say an early goodbye to the 2025 season. The New Orleans Saints confirmed that their third-round draft pick, a defensive tackle, will miss the remainder of the season due to a hip injury sustained during a close 21-26 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

According to reporter Mike Garafolo, Broughton’s hip injury is quite severe, and doctors are considering the possibility of surgery. Despite playing only 24 snaps in his debut, the player wearing number 91 showed hustle and great potential. However, the door to his season closed after just one afternoon on the field.

This is a major blow to the Saints’ defensive depth, which has already faced numerous issues since last season. With Broughton placed on the injured reserve, the Saints now rely solely on Davon Godchaux, Brian Bresee, Nathan Shepherd, and Khristian Boyd. Their defense, which ranked 31st against the run and 27th against the pass in 2024, is now even more fragile.

First-year head coach Kellen Moore, who is in the process of rebuilding the team, couldn’t hide his regret. “It’s heartbreaking to lose a promising rookie like Vernon. He’s hardworking, dedicated, and always gives his all on the field. You could see the potential every time he stepped out there. But that’s football—sometimes it can be cruel, and this is one of those tough moments we all have to face,” Moore shared.

New defensive coordinator Brandon Staley also expressed sympathy: “We need stability and depth, and Vernon was part of that plan. Losing him is a significant setback.”

In the locker room, quarterback Spencer Rattler admitted the team needs to step up to compensate for the loss: “We were so close to a win, but we need to start faster and cleaner.”

The Saints have started the season 0-2, with tough road games against Seattle and Buffalo ahead. Losing Vernon Broughton means not only losing a player but also losing a glimmer of hope for the immediate future of their defensive line.
