Packers Reach Verbal Agreement to Sign Veteran Cornerback Before Preseason Finale

GREEN BAY, WI – August 24, 2025

The Green Bay Packers have acted decisively to strengthen their secondary before their final preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks on August 24, 2025. With depth issues plaguing the cornerback position, the team has reached a verbal agreement with veteran Steven Nelson on a one-year, $4.5 million contract, pending a medical evaluation, according to team sources.

The Packers’ secondary has been a weak point throughout the preseason. Jaire Alexander’s precautionary rest has exposed vulnerabilities, while young cornerbacks like Carrington Valentine and Kalen King have struggled. Valentine allowed 7 completions for 109 yards in two games, with a Pro Football Focus grade of 52.3. The departure of Eric Stokes, Corey Ballentine, and Robert Rochell in free agency, combined with rookie Micah Robinson’s inexperience, has highlighted the need for a seasoned player. The experiment of converting wide receiver Bo Melton to cornerback further underscores the position’s thin depth.

Steven Nelson, 32, brings nine years of NFL experience from the Chiefs, Steelers, Eagles, and Texans. With 13 interceptions and 87 pass deflections, Nelson’s versatility in outside and slot coverage fits defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley’s scheme. “Nelson’s a veteran who can stabilize our backfield,” an NFC executive said. “He supports Alexander and mentors our young corners.”

The signing is critical as the Packers face the Seahawks in their preseason finale, a game crucial for finalizing the 53-man roster by August 26. Nelson’s 2023 performance with the Texans—4 interceptions and 12 pass deflections—shows he can contribute immediately. “We needed someone who can step up now,” head coach Matt LaFleur said, indicating Nelson’s potential role in the regular season.

Fans have welcomed the move on X, with one user posting, “Nelson’s experience is huge for our secondary!” The signing provides stability for a unit facing tough NFC North offenses, starting with the Detroit Lions on September 7. As the Packers prepare to battle Seattle’s passing attack, Nelson’s addition ensures fewer concerns in the secondary, blending experience with the team’s youthful potential.
